The S22i Studio Cycle with 22” screen and iFit Coach membership is NordicTrack’s response to the Peloton revolution. In other words, it’s a new way to “bring home” the energizing atmosphere of a spin bike studio. With downloaded spin class videos you can benefit from top-notch iFit Coach trainers and get motivated seeing other riders work toward fitness goals.

Also included with iFit Coach personal training are:

  • Unlimited downloads of Google Maps workouts, which let you virtually bike outside
  • Access to hundreds of iFit Coach exercise videos for workouts away from your bike
  • Automatic logging of fitness statistics such as heart rate and daily steps
  • Daily suggestions for calorie intake, and an easy way to track meals and snacks
  • Many other benefits for all-around personal training

Priced $2,999 before discounts, the S22i is the premium model in NordicTrack’s new Commercial Studio Cycle Series for 2018. You can easily distinguish this bike from the cheaper S10i: The S22i has a 22-inch screen, and the S10i has a 10” screen… but other components for the two bikes are identical. These include multi-grip handlebars; 22 resistance levels; power incline with settings from -10 to +20 percent; and pedals with cages. The saddle and pedals can be customized to match those of any standard road bike. Other key features are wireless telemetry and an iPod-compatible speaker system.

How does the NordicTrack S22i compare with the Peloton studio cycle? Most obvious is the identical 22” screen size, which helps create immersive workout experiences. Both bikes are wonderfully compact too. One important difference is that only the NordicTrack S22i has power incline/decline. Another difference is the type of instruction available with your $39 monthly membership: With NordicTrack your iFit Coach spin videos aren’t shown live like some Peloton classes, and the selection of spin classes is smaller. The tradeoff is that iFit Coach includes many other benefits such as Google Maps rides and exercise guidance in areas besides cycling. With iFit Coach membership you can choose from workout series as varied as Bikini Blitz, Maternity Yoga and Kickboxing.

Standard warranty coverage for the NordicTrack Commercial S22i Studio Cycle includes lifetime coverage for the frame, three years for the parts, and a year for labor. Extended warranties are available at checkout and after purchase.

The Great

  • 22″ HD Touchscreen: NordicTrack named the Commercial S22i Studio Cycle for its 22-inch diagonal touch screen. This impressive viewing screen has HD resolution for iFit Coach spin classes and other workout programs. For comparison the typical modern fitness machine has a screen that’s 10 inches or smaller.
  • On-Demand Cycling Classes: With the S22i and an iFit Coach membership, you can exercise with a motivating bike class environment anytime. Each time you power up your bike, the big screen will welcome you with tailored workout suggestions. If you choose a spin studio video, you’ll exercise with a sort of “virtual reality” gym experience: The iFit instructor will address the camera with specific tips and general encouragement. You’ll appreciate how each iFit Coach trainer is clearly a world-class personal trainer, an expert at shaping your body and providing encouragement.
  • Quiet Magnetic Resistance: Instead of using a contact brake, the S22i has its tension controlled magnetically. This friction-free resistance system helps the bike operate quietly. You can choose from 22 resistance levels for tailored strength training along with cardio exercise.
  • Upper-Body Exercise: Each NordicTrack Commercial Studio Cycle is shipped with a pair of three-pound dumbbells. Storage is provided behind the bike’s handlebars, so hand weights are always within easy reach. This makes it especially convenient to get upper-body exercise during bike workouts. Many of the iFit Coach bike studio videos provide instruction.
  • Heart Rate Monitoring: NordicTrack studio cycles have contact pulse sensors. They’re also compatible with Bluetooth chest straps for wireless heart rate monitoring. With the iFit Coach app you can automatically chart your pulse to track cardio health long-term.
  • Adjustable Saddle: This bike’s saddle is adjustable both vertically and horizontally to fit a wide range of user heights. It’s padded to promote comfort and endurance. Additionally it’s interchangeable with standard road bike saddles; you can customize your exercise bike to make it feel like your outdoor ride.
  • Caged Pedals: To give you extra stability during intense spin classes, bikes in the Commercial Studio Cycle Series have pedal cages. You can swap the pedals for standard road bike pedals too.
  • Compact Steel Frame: Compared with most home fitness machines, indoor cycle trainers need little space. The NordicTrack S22i is about 4½ feet long and 2 feet wide.
  • Transport Wheels: For easy repositioning after workouts this cross trainer has transport wheels. Just tilt the bike to roll it into position.
  • Emergency Stop: A prominent red brake button lets you quickly stop the wheel.

The Not so Great

  • Assembly: Standard delivery for NordicTrack studio bikes is free. However, for the S22i we recommend paying $250 for the premium delivery service, which includes assembly. This bike has more than 150 parts. By paying extra you’ll likely save lots of time and frustration.
  • Price: The S22i is one of the most expensive spin bikes on our review site. The advanced electronics push it into a high price bracket. Some shoppers would prefer to spend less on a durable ride with less flash.
  • Slow Customer Service: Typical wait times for NordicTrack customer service have been long in our anonymous shopping experiences and according to customer reviews.

Who Should Use The NordicTrack Commercial S22i Studio Cycle?

The S22i is optimized for fast calorie burn. Its custom workout videos appeal to people who’d appreciate some upper-body exercise along with lower-body exercise and cardio training.

Thanks to 22 resistance settings, this bike can offer a just-right challenge to just about anyone. Owing to its adjustability and 350-pound weight limit, it’s also a comfortable and safe ride for adults of most sizes.

Like any NordicTrack, this machine delivers the best value to people who enjoy trying new workouts on a regular basis. The iFit Coach team gives daily options for studio-like training experiences, plus you can download an unlimited number of Google Maps workouts and other customized workout programs.

NordicTrack studio cycles are for high-energy training. If you seek mostly low-intensity rides that are gentler on your knees, then a different style of exercise bike – especially a recumbent bike – would be a better match.

The Bottom Line

For years iFit Coach has helped make NordicTrack a leading brand of exercise bike. With the new Commercial S22i you can benefit from iFit personal training in a new way: with videos of high quality spin classes on demand! You’ll also get access to the longtime favorite iFit Coach feature — unlimited Google Maps workouts — with vivid landscape views and automated incline/decline.

In sum this bike is a favorite option for alternating between gym-style training and scenic outdoor tours. You could spend less on a durable exercise bike, but workouts probably wouldn’t be as enticing! If saving money isn’t a top priority, then the high-tech S22i Studio Cycle is a logical finalist in your search for a fun spin bike.

Does it have a power meter?
    • Bike Review Pros June 18, 2019 at 12:48 pm
Hi Chris, according to the performance specs listed on NordicTrack's website, there is a watts power readout on the S22i.

My company bought about $10,000 worth of equipment including 2 S22i bikes. We paid an extra $250 for each bike for white glove set up service. It was anything but white glove. We reported 9 months ago that something was wrong and so far NordicTrack has refused to fix the bikes. We also bought an Elliptical Rider that arrived damaged and that too was reported the same day. And yet it still sits exactly where it was delievered and again NordicTrack has done nothing. Buyer beware. You cannot rely upon NordicTrack after they have your money. Maybe other companies are just as bad. I don't know. I can only warn you of my experience.

Hi James, have you since been able to get a hold of customer service? Is your purchase still under warranty?

DO NOT EVER PURCHASE THIS BIKE!!! Nordic track has the worst customer service I've ever dealt with. When I received my bike and paid for the White glove delivery, they put it together wrong as we had a tech come out and tell us that. Instead of fixing it then we had to file a claim, which in turn took another week just for the tech to come out. Then the bike incline and decline stopped working and the parts on on back order. Not to be out done I asked for a refund in the beginning of April and the company Icon fitness still has not picked up the bike. My wife has called on 4 separate occasions this month and has been on hold at least 45 mins each time. Stay away, do not purchase this item.

Hi Charles, we are so sorry to hear about your experience with this machine. Were you able to return the bike or receive a new one? Has the company been able to resolve the issues indicated in your comment?

The many moving parts and the quirky little problems, like no on off switch, left peddle arm loosens when under tension, m6 screw keep falling out and peddle arm loosens. Saddle does not tighten so that in and out of saddle work outs become frustrating. * im 5 5 155lbs) heart monitor does not always connect. not necessarily bike problem could be internet or monitor but adds to quirky little frustrations. GPS and work out programs are great and very helpful and entertaining. however, I didn't expect to have to make as many adjustment as I would on a rode bike. Service center response is …….lets just say awful. The solution advise was so far off the mark its as if they talking about another bike. (go to Walmart and by wheel puller) What? what about loosening the two screws to take it off? yikes. weeks before I got the parts. which were incorrect? and some were duplicate. yikes. Good potential, not there yet. If your a type A.. skip this one. They asked if I wanted to replace it with a new one. Deer in the headlight look on my face.

Hi Robert, we are sorry to hear about the issues you are having with your machine and the service. Have you been able to speak to a representative who can help you with the mechanical side of the issues? We may also suggest having a technician come in to look at the machine in person as they may be able to better address the issue instead of over the phone. We hope these issues can be resolved so that you can continue to use it properly.

Customer service is the worst i have ever dealt with. Purchased a S221 cycle . Waited two weeks for it . It was delivered and was damaged. Called warranty department and customer service only to be placed on hold for 30 minutes until the were closed. I am canceling my order and now going with a different company. I will never buy any thing from this company again.
    • Exercise Bike Editorial Team February 28, 2019 at 2:17 pm
Hi Tambria, Thanks for writing in and we're sorry that the customer service was so terrible with NordicTrack. If you're looking for a bike that might satisfy your needs, maybe try Echelon or the Peloton bike.
